Bridging on a Budget: Mikrotik SXTsq Lite - Compact, Flexible, and Affordable
The SXTsq Lite is a well-designed, decent performing WiFi bridge from Mikrotik at a great price. Its OS might be a bit intimidating to setup for networking novices, but it's powerful and will be supported with updates for many years. In this video, I take a look at the hardware, go through the setup process and benchmark the performance.

Hello Ben I am sure we know each other Im guessing it was during the maple syrup fest you know the one im sure right there between PEI and Vancouver island not to far from Toronto. If I remember you apologized when the moose I was riding hit your car at the Tim Hortens and later we became good friends while drinking strong beer called Canadian and eating French fry's with cheese and gravy. Thank you for helping me know what Canada to pick I was afraid that Canada 2 might be French and im not in government or live in "That Province" ....................anyway i am rely liking your videos and I even added myself as a subscriber. I am in no way an expert on you tube but did make and post a bunch of videos a number of years ago and even got a few checks from google until they made some big changes in there algorithm and around the same time some health troubles started to catch up with me and the little break I told myself I would take has gotten a little long at 7 years now. I do see just from a quick glance that you could likely take the utube thing as far as you would like your presentation editing and topics are in line with what seems to work on utube. The fact that I was recommended one of your videos not having looked into anything related to internet or WiFi in many years you have a good amount of comments on some of your video most important I think are like the one guy who basically said you were wrong and went off on a bunch of crap about cable termination made me wonder if he watched the same video I did I am sure the video was called Bridging on a Budget: Cheaply extending WiFi to another building not "a hour long detailed guide to terminating out door cable for professional installers who care about every little detail" . The comments like his I would recommend skipping the Canadian apology and either letting someone like me explain why he is dumb or use a different account although I think it is a good idea to "fess up" to bigger mistakes or missed info. I noticed another comment about spacing out video release and you should defiantly double check me but I understood that the all mighty utube algorithm prefers regularity over all. So every day at 3pm or once a month the 15th at noon or 7am every Sunday what ever it is if you could have a video ready to release or scheduled to at a regular time and interval then the all mighty will take you more serous and push your videos to even more people. I also think it might be a benefit as a creator like the 5 video series you put out a month ago could have been released at one a month giving you 5 months to come up with the next video or bunch of videos. In reality you could probably shoot a bunch of footage on a long weekend every 6 months and then edit over time or something to have a base line of videos coming out once a month to build up your channel and if you got into the actual getting payed status then you could justify a number of options hiring out editing reducing other work and so on. there is a surprising number of Canadian utube creators who are real good and do well some i watched for years before I figured out they were Canadian but you can be sure I always feel that quiet sense of Canadian pride when I see them do well

When you want connect ip cameras over some meter/kilometers, is stable use ptp wifi antennas like mikrotik sxt, or nanostation loco m5/m2, is good for many cases ... ( for short distance to 1-4km they can achieve even more ), for long distance use someone better, or you can use singlemode optic fiber, with for example hex s routerboards. Or optic with converter to metalic, but you will still need router or switch on both site so .... :D.

Your presentation style is clear and easy to follow, but some of the information you're presenting is not correct or even safe. You don't ever want to crimp RJ45 plugs onto bulk solid conductor cable. Instead, you should use field termination plugs or punchdown jack and weather rated biscuit box with manufactured UV rated patch cables. Also, you made zero mention of installing lightning arresters and how to properly bond them to ground.

  • @BestSpatula

if you own the land between your two endpoints, why not just run direct burial fiber? It's faster, more secure, more reliable, and likely about the same cost.

Great video but I think you missed one of the most important points - if you're installing any of these equipment outdoors, even if it's under a partial shelter (roof overhangs etc), do install an in-line Ethernet surge protector to protect the equipment behind it. e.g. router/ switch/ PoE injector etc. I've seen an install in a customer's site back in my old workplace where they had to replace the surge protector 2 to 3 times a year because of lightning activity despite the fact that the extender was installed under an overhang and the building (small concrete shed) had a properly installed lightning rod. The surge protectors did protect the rest of the equipment (enterprise switches, routers, and ISP CPEs) behind it though, so that saved a lot of potential lost time and effort to replace these.

Hi. I strongly recommend against publishing videos all at once, you have a decent subscriber base and they might not want to watch them all at once, then just forget about them, and these videos will get less views from subscribers at the end of the day (algorithm will take that worse-than-aveage-performance into consideration, usually as "this videos are bad let's not recommend them"). Next time you do a video series like this, consider publishing them with one or two day in between to avoid videos from competing with each other essentially. All the best.

A better product would be HALOW 802.11AH combined with 802.11s Basically long range WIFI in the ranges of 1.5km up to 3km achieved thru 700, 800, or 900mhz frequencies and narrow bands from 1 to 8mhz. And combine that with mesh networking of 802.11s similar with the Alfa Halow-U. Then it becomes a great product. Some suggestions might be; - make Halow MIMO device for increased bandwidth up to 32mbps maybe. - lower frequency to 200, 300, and 500mhz and possibly increase the power output to somewhere in the 5, 10, 20 watts for increased range maybe 5 to 6 miles. - add removable battery for portability like a ham radio. - put it in a ruggedized case similar to an MPU5 for tactical usage with two removable MIMO antennas above. And a gx16 8pin port for ethernet connectivity. Also 2.4ghz wifi hotspot. Since it would offer similar functionality of long distance IP mesh networking to EUD or smartphones offering data, video, voice comms. - AES256 encryption maybe. - add a built-in hardware for voice comms like zello. And also a simple user interface for setting channel, encryption, and pairing devices. Finished product would be a civillian MPU5 clone that would be low cost but definitely functional, robust, and cheaper. Market would be Military Enthusiasts, EMCOM, NGO's, Ham radio hobbyists, Airsoft and MILSIMs, and many others.

This is super interesting to me. I go to a gun club that is just under 1.2km from my house and the cellular reception there is awful. If you stand in a certain spot you MIGHT get a single bar for 30 seconds. I wonder if a directional antenna from my property would be capable of providing a low quality internet service there - Just enough to use Wifi calling and maybe some very light web browsing. It would have to go through quite a lot of bush land so it would be pushing this sort of equipment to the absolute limits. I'd also want a product that could be PoE powered on both ends. Perhaps a product that included everything in one kit including the antenna would be ideal. If I could use that as a proof of concept I'd bet a lot of people in my area would be interested as I live in a semi-rural area.

This restriction is established to ensure equitable use of the spectrum and to mitigate any interference with other devices.
